Watro, Argall Announce $1.1 Million in Funding for Transportation Improvements in Luzerne, Schuylkill Counties

January 21, 2026

HAZLETON – Rep. Dane Watro (R-Luzerne/Schuylkill) and Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) today announced $1.1 million in Multimodal Transportation Fund Program grants have been awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority for some municipalities in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties.

“These investments are a big win for our communities,” said Watro. “Streetscape improvements in Hazleton, new sidewalks and lighting in East Union Township and road rehabilitation in West Hazleton will make travel safer and more efficient for residents and visitors alike. I was proud to support these projects because they strengthen local infrastructure, improve quality of life and help ensure our region remains a great place to live and work.”

The following funds have been awarded:

• The City of Hazleton, Luzerne County, will use its $500,000 grant for streetscape enhancements along Wyoming Street.
• East Union Township, Schuylkill County, will use its $350,000 grant to install sidewalks and streetlights along two blocks of Center Street.
• West Hazleton Borough, Luzerne County, will use its $250,000 grant to rehabilitate Harvey Street, North Broad Street and Park Circle.

“Upkeeping our roads and sidewalks is an important piece of building strong communities, yet these projects can be very expensive for local governments,” said Argall. “I’m grateful this highly competitive state funding will not only make our communities safer but also breathe new life into our downtowns.”

The Multimodal Transportation Fund provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Financing Authority was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development to administer Pennsylvania’s economic stimulus packages.
